Siemens & Auth0: Why the Conglomerate Is Now Betting on Login Services

By Tobias Massow · February 4, 2020 · 4 min read

To streamline onboarding for business and end customers, the Siemens Group will now centralize its login services worldwide using Auth0, the identity platform for application developers. From now on, all internal and external login processes will run through a single, cloud-based authentication service.

The new login service is built on Auth0’s highly scalable identity platform, which not only centrally stores user data but also enables flexible connections to various identity providers. This allows every division within the company to tailor the “Siemens ID” to its specific workflows and user habits (a feature known as multi-tenancy).

“Before we implemented Auth0’s platform, we had to develop policies and rules to manage identity externally and in compliance with regulations. This tied up significant internal resources and created high complexity. Now Auth0 handles all of this for us, allowing us to refocus on our core business instead of managing multiple logins and user accounts,” said Hugo Francisco, Service Owner, IAM Solutions at Siemens.

Siemens placed particular emphasis on enabling multifactor authentication (MFA) within the “Siemens ID” design. Users can now choose from three different two-factor authentication methods: SMS, one-time passwords (OTP), and push notifications. As part of the collaboration, Auth0 has enhanced the identity solution with additional security features such as Universal Login and Anomaly Detection.

“Global players like Siemens need a standardized, centralized identity platform that simultaneously offers department-level flexibility and a high level of security,” said Steven Rees-Pullman, Vice President of International at Auth0. “Our solution is capable of scaling seamlessly alongside the company and its organizational structures.”

What are the most common cyber threats facing businesses?

According to the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security) threat report, ransomware, phishing, DDoS attacks, and supply-chain compromises are the most prevalent threats. German companies also face regulatory risks (GDPR, NIS2 Directive).

How much should a company invest in cybersecurity?

Industry experts recommend allocating 10 to 15 percent of the IT budget to cybersecurity. According to Bitkom, German companies currently average 14 percent. What matters is not just the amount, but the strategic distribution across prevention, detection, and response.
